College & Career Readiness Standards

The Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards Initiative is a state-led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts and mathematics that states voluntarily adopt. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter credit-bearing entry courses in two-year or four-year college programs or enter the workforce.

The Standards set requirements for English Language Arts (ELA), Math, History/Social Studies, Science, and technical subjects. Students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas. Reading skills are the foundation for any creative and purposeful expression in language. Text complexity and critical reading of informational text are the heart of ELA standards.  In mathematics, standards were created to demonstrate a stronger emphasis on number sense and algebraic thinking.
